Protect your vision and improve comfort with personalized evaluation and treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease designed to preserve eye health and restore confidence.
Specialized Care for Thyroid-Related Eye Conditions
Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation of the tissues surrounding the eyes. It can affect your vision, eye comfort, and appearance, sometimes making everyday activities more difficult.
At North Columbus Eye Center, we provide comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment for patients with Thyroid Eye Disease. Our goal is to protect your vision, relieve discomfort, and help you maintain long-term eye health.
What Is Thyroid Eye Disease?
Thyroid Eye Disease occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the muscles, fat, and connective tissues around the eyes. This inflammation can cause swelling within the eye socket, affecting how the eyes look, feel, and function.
Although TED is most commonly associated with Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism), it can also occur in people with hypothyroidism or even those with normal thyroid hormone levels.
Early diagnosis and treatment are important to help prevent permanent changes and preserve vision.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms can vary from mild irritation to more significant vision problems.
You may experience:
- Dry, gritty, or irritated eyes
- Redness or excessive tearing
- Eye pain or pressure
- Light sensitivity
- Puffy eyelids
- Swelling around the eyes
- Eyes that appear to bulge forward
- Eyelids that no longer close completely
- Double vision
- Blurred or decreased vision
If you notice sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
Who Is at Risk?
You may be at increased risk if you:
- Have Graves’ disease
- Have another thyroid disorder
- Smoke or use tobacco products
- Have a family history of autoimmune disease
Smoking is one of the strongest risk factors for developing more severe Thyroid Eye Disease and may reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
How Is Thyroid Eye Disease Diagnosed?
A comprehensive eye examination allows us to evaluate your eye health and determine whether Thyroid Eye Disease is affecting your vision.
Your evaluation may include:
- Comprehensive eye examination
- Vision testing
- Eye movement evaluation
- Eyelid assessment
- Measurement of eye prominence
- Corneal evaluation
Optic nerve assessment
- Imaging studies when appropriate
- Every treatment plan is tailored to your symptoms, the severity of your condition, and whether the disease is active or stable.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the stage and severity of your disease.
Lubrication & Eye Protection
Artificial tears, lubricating ointments, and protective strategies can help relieve irritation caused by exposure and dryness.
Medical Therapy
When inflammation is active, medications may be recommended to reduce swelling and protect the eyes.
Double Vision Management
Prism glasses or other treatments may help improve vision affected by double vision.
Surgical Treatment
Once the disease has stabilized, surgery may be recommended to improve eye comfort, vision, eyelid position, or eye appearance.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Thyroid Eye Disease often progresses through an active inflammatory phase before becoming stable. Early evaluation allows us to monitor changes, protect the surface of the eye, and recommend treatment when appropriate.
If you have thyroid disease and notice changes in your eyes, don’t wait for symptoms to worsen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does everyone with thyroid disease develop Thyroid Eye Disease?
No. While Thyroid Eye Disease is most commonly associated with Graves’ disease, many people with thyroid disorders never develop eye involvement.
Can Thyroid Eye Disease affect my vision?
Yes. In more advanced cases, inflammation can affect eye movement, cause double vision, or place pressure on the optic nerve, potentially threatening vision.
Is Thyroid Eye Disease permanent?
Some symptoms improve as inflammation resolves, while others may persist. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce the risk of permanent changes.
Does smoking make Thyroid Eye Disease worse?
Yes. Smoking significantly increases both the risk and severity of Thyroid Eye Disease and may reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
Is Thyroid Eye Disease the same as having a thyroid problem?
No. Thyroid Eye Disease is a separate autoimmune condition that affects the tissues around the eyes. Even if your thyroid hormone levels are well controlled, eye symptoms can still occur.
